Turmeric

Flavor Profile

Story: A rhizome (as is ginger), turmeric is a stem of the turmeric plant that grows underground, giving it a knobby, dried skin look. Underneath that skin, however, is a beautiful, bright yellow-orange color. Use it in its powdered form, or grate whole dried pieces on a fine zester for an even stronger presence.

Flavors:  Deep, musky and earthy in flavor, turmeric has an even more peppery flavor when whole, with slight notes of ginger. The bright color is crucial in curry dishes and can lend itself to other applications as well.

Use:  Use in traditional Indian dishes and to bring color to dishes. Use to enhance pickles and stir into fruit chutneys for a delicious condiment.
